Consumer rights regulator CCPA has issued a notice against electric two-wheeler maker Ola as it launches a class action after over 10,000 complaints related to quality and after-sales service are remained unanswered, according to sources.

The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has received complaints against Ola Electric over the past year, which have been escalated to higher levels within the company for redressal, “but little interest has been shown to redress these complaints,” a source said.

Subsequently, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) “began reviewing these complaints for class action and found that over the past year, NCH had received more than 10,000 complaints” , added the source.

According to the source, the main categories of consumer complaints include billing during the free service/warranty period, delayed and unsatisfactory services, refusal or delay of warranty services, inadequate services, recurring defects despite services, inconsistent performance compared to announced claims, overcharging and inaccurate invoices.

Additionally, failure to provide refunds and documentation, unprofessional conduct and closure of complaints, as well as multiple issues with the vehicle’s battery and components were highlighted by aggrieved consumers, a source said.

Under the CCPA, the primary grounds for issuing a show cause notice are alleged violation of consumer rights, deficiencies in services, misleading claims and unfair trade practices.
On October 7, the CCPA issued a show cause notice against Ola Electric and gave the company 15 days to respond.

Before issuing the notice, the CCPA headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra considered these consumer complaints with a view to class action.

On October 7, Ola Electric informed stock exchanges that the company had received a show cause notice from the CCPA. The authority granted 15 days to the company to respond to the show cause notice, the filing said.

The company said it would respond to the authority within the specified time frame with supporting documents.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has revamped the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), which has become a single access point for consumers across the country for redressal of grievances at the pre-litigation stage.

It is accessible to all consumers in the country and consumers can register their complaints from across the country in 17 languages through a toll-free number 1915. These complaints can be registered on the Integrated Grievance Redressal Mechanism (INGRAM), an omni-channel IT system . central portal enabled, through various channels: Whats app, SMS, mail, NCH app, web portal and Umang app as per their convenience.

Ola Electric currently sells three models of electric scooters and in August this year announced its foray into the electric motorcycle segment.

Earlier this week, a war of words broke out between Ola founder Bhavish Agarwal and comedian Kunal Kamra on social media platform X over the after-sales and service quality of scooters electrical equipment of the company. Kamra had resolved the after-sales and service issues faced by Ola Electric customers.
