Indian Hockey League uses image to release Tom Craig from police custody

Hockey India used a photo of Tom Craig after his release from Paris police custody in a social media post following the Australian’s purchase in the upcoming Hockey India League.

Tamil Nadu Dragons offered Rs 20 lakh (£18,000) by acquiring their eight foreign players on the second day of the HIL auction.

In a social media post using a passport for successful foreign players picked up by franchises, Hockey India used what appeared to be the same image that depicted Craig making a statement to the media following his release from police custody in August.

This followed his arrest on suspicion of purchasing cocaine during the Paris Olympics.

Craig admitted he made a “terrible mistake” after being released from a Paris police station following Australia’s quarter-final elimination in Paris.

Australian head of mission Anna Meares said at the time that Craig was “a good person who made a bad decision”.

Craig was banned from playing international hockey for 12 months, but plays club hockey in Germany with Hamburger and most recently competed in the European Hockey League at Surbiton.

He will now also play in the revamped HIL, having been picked up by the Tamil Nadu Dragons franchise, which includes Craig’s teammates Blake Govers and Nathan Ephraums.
