Green Mountain Energy Solar Club uses the sun to dance at Silambam Houston

HOUSTON , June 6, 2024 /CSRwire/ – Silambam Houston is making sustainability a priority by installing a rooftop solar panel and a new pavilion at its Pearland dance studio thanks to a nearly $103,000 grant from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club.

The 14.58 kW solar panel is expected to provide 100 percent of the building’s energy needs and save the organization more than $4,000 annually for the next 25 years. The Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Sustainability Pavilion will serve as an outdoor gathering space for receptions and events at the facility.

Silambam is an Indian classical arts organization that aims to increase appreciation and understanding of Indian artistic traditions across cultural boundaries. The performing arts academy program enrolls 180 students each week, has a staff of more than 20 teaching artists, and a professional dance company of more than 20 dancers regularly performs in Houston concert venues, including the Miller Outdoor Theater. The organization runs the “Dancing in STEM” series, which aims to explain the STEM concept that combines the founder’s two passions – dance and science.

“We are excited to incorporate sustainable practices into our art programs while also giving back to the community,” said Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan, founder and artistic director of Silambam. “The annual savings from this project will allow us to increase artist wages, provide tuition waivers to economically disadvantaged students, and/or provide free or paid access to our ArtStream concerts, all to benefit the environment.”
