New laws to protect public spaces

A council has renewed powers to help tackle anti-social behavior and make areas safe to visit.

South Kesteven District Council has issued new Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act.

The three-year orders cover issues such as misconduct and the exclusion of dogs from enclosed play areas.

Anyone who fails to comply with a PSPO may face prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000, or a fixed penalty notice of £100.

PSPOs are applied to areas where issues that may have a negative impact on quality of life have been raised.

Councilor Rhea Rayside said: “These PSPOs are not intended to stop responsible use of open spaces or stop people enjoying themselves, but they do provide the council with another option to help resolve ongoing issues that harm our local communities.

“We know from speaking to people from all walks of life how impactful anti-social behavior can be on lives, with those affected often feeling powerless to act. »

Orders will expire in 2027.
