FEMA agents withdraw in western North Carolina due to threats: officials

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – FEMA agents are withdrawing in parts of western North Carolina and canceling some meetings due to threats against staff members, according to some local agencies in the region.

Ashe County Emergency Management said FEMA canceled events in the area due to threats received in other parts of the region. Officials said a constant stream of misinformation was part of the problem.

Out of an abundance of caution, these FEMA employees will not travel to contact residents while the agency investigates the threats.

Ashe County Emergency Management released the following statement. “FEMA staff will not be in Lansing or Riverview today, Sunday, October 13, to accept applications. We will post an update on resuming in-person applications as soon as we receive information from FEMA. We understand that all FEMA representatives in North Carolina have been resigned due to threats occurring in certain counties (not Ashe), but we have not received any official correspondence on this issue from FEMA.

The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office also looked into the matter. “Recently, in the mountain region, there have been threats against (FEMA). This did not happen in Ashe County or surrounding counties. Out of an abundance of caution, they suspended their process while they assessed the threats.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates
