Analysis: Lowering key local renewable energy targets highlights gaps in China’s power grid

China has lowered a key renewable energy target set for provincial governments as the country’s growing wind and solar power capacity makes it increasingly difficult for the grid to absorb its production.

According to a new notice published by the National Energy Administration (NEA) today, areas with abundant resources only need to achieve a new energy utilization rate of “substantially not less than 90%”, a five percentage point decline compared to previous date. June 4.
