MacOS software version overview

The annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC24) officially kicked off yesterday, June 10, 2024.

It was one of the most memorable events of the year, where Apple introduced us to several software releases with artificial intelligence (AI) at its center.

Today we’ll take a look at the latest software features announced by Apple for macOS 15 Sequoia and how they will shape up to provide a more immersive experience while making your life much easier.

WWDC24: All the key features of the new iOS 18 update

This year’s update focuses heavily on user customization and the power of artificial intelligence (AI)

Below are the software versions for macOS 15 Sequoia:

Apple Intelligence

  • Of course, why not? Apple isn’t known for taking a backseat when it comes to artificial intelligence, so it’s no surprise that Apple is being smart by naming its new ecosystem Apple Intelligence.
  • This AI ecosystem is how Apple is working with OpenAI to leverage the LLM models that OpenAI has built on, thanks in part to its success with ChatGPT.
  • Now Apple is bringing this ecosystem to macOS 15, as well as iPhone and iPad. However, Apple does this in a unique way that is different from what we have seen from other competing tech giants.
  • How? Well, Apple gives users power by allowing them to decide to enable and use the Apple Intelligence ecosystem, rather than simply making it an integral part of their products.
  • In this way, Apple is, to some extent, withdrawing from the chaotic rat race, positioning itself as a cautious and more ethical entity when it comes to artificial intelligence.

Continuity

  • Apple announced a Windows version of Phone Link called “Continuity” that connects your Macbook to your iPhone, making it easier to access your iPhone remotely via your laptop.
  • The software giant has dubbed the interaction “iPhone mirroring,” which essentially brings your iPhone’s home screen to your MacBook, allowing you to manage notifications from your phone directly on your laptop, drag and drop between your iPhone and MacBook, and swipe between pages or launch your favorite apps directly from your MacBook .
  • The Continuity app also works great with the new standby mode on iPhone, allowing you to quickly access information.
  • Your iPhone stays locked while you play with these activities, so you don’t have to worry about someone else gaining access or seeing what you’re doing.

Siri 2.0

  • We all know that Siri has been around since 2011 and since then it has experienced stiff competition from other AI assistants that had more to offer. This is no longer the case as Apple has decided to go a step further with a massive upgrade enhanced with AI features.
  • Now the new Siri as an AI assistant will be present in the macOS Sequoia user interface, instead of being a standalone application.
  • It will work with LLM ChatGPT to allow the AI to communicate in a more natural context, continuing previous conversations and messages rather than providing full context in every single prompt.
  • Additionally, Siri 2.0 now has screen recognition, which allows it to respond to what you see on screen without having to provide specific context for each prompt in a way that wasn’t previously possible.

New and improved Safari

  • Apple has confirmed that Safari now has a “Highlights” feature that makes it easier to find information on the web, such as directions, summaries or quick links to learn more about people, music, movies and TV shows.
  • The browser now also has a redesigned “Reader” that makes reading articles on macOS Sequoia more enjoyable and distraction-free by offering a simplified view of the article the user is reading, a summary and table of contents for longer articles.
  • Another interesting new software update is that when Safari detects a video on the page you’re on, the browser helps bring it to the foreground while giving you full access to system playback controls, including picture-in-picture.

New password app

  • Now available on macOS Sequoia is a new iCloud Keychain-based app that essentially makes it easier to access your passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and other credentials in one place.
  • There’s also a new iCloud sync feature, backed by secure, end-to-end encryption, that lets you seamlessly sync passwords between your Apple devices and Windows using iCloud for Windows directly in Safari.

Improved video conferencing

  • Video conferencing on MacBook now has a new Presenter Preview that makes presenting easier and lets you see what you want to share before you share it. Works with applications such as FaceTime and Zoom.
  • You can also apply beautiful built-in backgrounds, including various color gradients and system wallpaper, or upload your own photos.
  • There is also a background replacement option that can be applied during a FaceTime video call or third-party apps like Webex, so you look your best while on the call.
