GitHub CEO predicts Indian economic boom thanks to convergence of software and artificial intelligence

  • Over 15.4 million developers in India are currently using GitHub, up 33% year-on-year and will overtake the US as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027
  • GitHub CEO Urges India to Enable Major Convergence Between Artificial Intelligence and Soon World’s Largest Developer Community

GitHub, the world’s leading development platform powered by Copilot, today revealed that it is over 15.4 million developers in India use GitHub, up 33% year-on-year (YoY). By 2027, India will overtake the US as the largest developer community on GitHub.

With this growth GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke highlighted that India’s growing developer community, coupled with newfound artificial intelligence capabilities, will not only accelerate digital transformation but will drive India’s tremendous human and economic progress.

During his address to technology leaders at GitHub Galaxy Bengaluru Dohmke said: “Where there are software developers, there is economic growth. By 2027, India will overtake the United States to become the largest software community on Earth. This alone signals incredible prosperity to come, but there is more to it than that. At the same time that India’s developer population is growing rapidly, the era of artificial intelligence has begun.

“Developers are already 55% faster using Copilot, which means the software economy, valued in the trillions globally, is growing much faster thanks to AI. In a way no other country on Earth can boast: India is on the verge of a great convergence between the world’s largest software developer population and its newfound artificial intelligence capabilities. If enabled, this great convergence will create an economic boom in India that will be felt around the world for generations to come.

“India will not only be a global leader, but also a global leader in the era of artificial intelligence. Both children and adults will learn coding in their native language, leading to a long-term influx of programmers. Creativity in Indian open source will flourish with a spring of AI innovation and startups. Indian companies will gain a competitive advantage in the global market as their developers will create software with faster coding speeds.” Dohmke added.

Enterprises using the Copilot-powered GitHub platform

Today, GitHub Copilot has 1.8 million paid subscribers and has been deployed by over 50,000 organizations around the world. In India, GitHub revealed that it continues to see adoption of its Copilot-based platform by companies across all industries, including Infosys, Competent, MakeMyTripAND paymentgrowing productivity and pace of innovation in these enterprises.

said Mohammed Rafee Tarafdar, chief technology officer at Infosys: : “At Infosys, we are passionate about unlocking human potential and GitHub is a strategic partner in this endeavor. GitHub Second Pilot empowers our developers to increase productivity and efficiency and enable them to focus more on value-creating tasks. Generational AI is transforming every aspect of the software lifecycle, and by leveraging the resources of Infosys Topaz, we are accelerating the adoption of Generational AI for our customers. We are excited to work with GitHub to unlock the full potential of this technology and deliver customer-relevant solutions.”

Prasad Sankaran, vice president of software engineering and platforms at Cognizant, said: : “Since implementing GitHub Copilot, we have seen greater productivity, improved software quality, and our developers have been able to deliver software ahead of the competition. By Cognizant’s for now Synapse under the skills program, 35,000 Cognizant developers have been trained on GitHub Copilot and an additional 40,000 developers are expected to be trained. We’ve seen the impact that AI can bring, and we’re committed to ensuring our developers can use GitHub Copilot at scale. It is a proven tool that can deliver massive productivity gains and unlock innovation in completely new ways.”

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder and CEO, Paytm, said: Security was of utmost importance to Paytm given our financial services offering. To monitor our rapidly expanding public cloud infrastructure, Paytm used third-party tools. This would end up in resource delivery delays and impacting overall productivity. Using GitHub Copilot, Paytm has launched ‘Code Armor’, a solution that is revolutionizing the way we approach security and development.

Sanjay Mohan, Group CTO at MakeMyTrip, said: “The integration of GitHub Copilot in MakeMyTrip has resulted in significant productivity gains on several fronts. Developers are spared the tedium of coding mundane things, freeing up time to solve higher-level problems, which is the foundation of our travel business. The QA team spends more time being the true voice of the customer in the organization, using GitHub Copilot to automatically generate unit/integration tests and leveraging performance gains to comprehensively cover edge cases. DevOps/SecOps teams also gain significant efficiency by taking a “shift left” approach to application security.”

Copilot accelerates open source innovation

Finally, GitHub showed how open source communities in India are using GitHub Copilot to build digital solutions that help save lives, such as the Open Healthcare Network, a pioneering open source organization that aims to improve healthcare delivery and management. The Open Healthcare Network represents a unique combination of professional expertise and community-driven innovation. Powered by a small team of dedicated developers, GitHub Copilot is accelerating the project’s development as it meets the needs of the country’s healthcare system.

“The 10BedICU project, now implemented in over 200 hospitals, uses CARE EMR, which has been significantly improved using GitHub Copilot. This powerful tool of generative AI has dramatically increased our productivity in coding, documentation, and testing. Our ‘Open Healthcare Network’ community of contributors has fully embraced GitHub Copilot, leveraging its cutting-edge capabilities to transform healthcare in India and around the world.” said Srikanth Nadhamuni, Founder CTO Aadhaar, CEO 10BedICU.
