Residents of Queensland, Australia benefit from digital driving licenses powered and protected by Thales

Since its launch on November 1, 2023, the Queensland Digital License app has reached over 500,000 users, demonstrating Queenslanders’ clear appetite for a secure digital identity. With core technology provided by Thales, supported by development and operations from local partners Code Heroes and Aliva, the QLD Digital License app is easy to use, secure and designed with data security and user privacy in mind. The app includes features such as multi-factor authentication, Queensland Digital Identity (QDI) integration and built-in verification to securely exchange information between users. The app’s consent-based design provides individual control over its identifying information – users can present or share information from the app by selecting from common use cases that reveal only information relevant to the transaction, e.g. “proof of age” that displays an “over 18” screen ” without revealing your date of birth, address or driving information – a popular feature. The app currently provides digital driving licenses, age proof cards (18+) and maritime entitlements, with the possibility of more digital documents being made available in the future.

Businesses that need to verify identity or age requirements in order to provide goods or services can download the standalone (QLD) Verifier for Digital License application, which electronically confirms the authenticity of data received from the Digital License application. Digital verification is also expected to help companies reduce the need to store sensitive identity data attributes because the verification process is quick and simple, allowing for point-in-time verification across a wide range of use cases. The requirements for developing verification capabilities are publicly available as part of the Mobile Driving License Application Standard (ISO/IEC18013-5), enabling the larger ecosystem to build complementary verification solutions and increase the usability of the digital driving license in everyday life.

Thales’ QLD Digital License and Verifier for Digital License apps are now available to Queenslanders in mobile app stores.

“There is nothing more important than your private data, which should be particularly protected. We are proud of the current success of the Queensland Digital License app, which keeps private information safe while offering a modern digital experience. The app undergoes rigorous privacy and information security testing to protect your identity. Aligns with international standards for mobile driving licenses, setting the standard for mobile driving license applications in Australia and globally. commentedMark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads.

“Through this collaboration, Thales demonstrates its proven ability to provide citizens with highly convenient and secure solutions that allow them to fully benefit from digitalization. The Queensland Digital License application is a significant milestone in the digital ID market, demonstrating the growing importance and appetite for alignment with international standards for mobile driving licenses and interoperability across national borders. he said Youzec Kurp, senior vice president of identity and biometric solutions at Thales.
