IMD expert calls for stronger regulations to prioritize AI security

GENEVA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — An expert from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) has called for stricter regulations to prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) security.

Michael Wade, director of IMD’s TONOMUS Global Center for Digital and AI Transformation, made these comments in an interview with Xinhua following IMD’s recent unveiling of its new “AI Security Clock.”

The clock is designed to assess the growing threats posed by uncontrolled artificial general intelligence (UAGI).

Drawing inspiration from the “Doomsday Clock”, experts from the IMD TONOMUS Global Center for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence set it at 29 minutes to midnight. Wade noted that their extensive analysis of AI and regulatory complexity put the clock at just above medium risk.

The expert called for stronger international regulations and urged organizations to prioritize AI security to prevent the clock from creeping closer to midnight.

IMD created the clock after a comprehensive analysis of technology and announcements from over 3,500 companies and governments around the world.

The clock involves ongoing monitoring and assessment of quantitative and qualitative factors, and its position is updated every three years or adjusted as necessary based on the assessments.

Wade said: “Effective, common regulation can curb the worst trends in new technologies without losing the benefits, which is why we call on international players and tech giants to act in our best interests.”
