Evictions in Las Vegas Valley remain high years after pandemic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Evictions in the Las Vegas Valley remain high years after the pandemic, and housing advocates say inflation is impacting families’ ability to pay bills and rent.

So far in 2024, 38,000 households in Clark County have received eviction notices, according to the Eviction Lab. Figures for 2024 cases are still coming in.

In September, 4,400 local families were sent a notice to vacate their homes; That number is still 39% above the pre-pandemic average, according to Eviction Lab.

“Many of our customers are being hit from all sides. Not only is the rent going up, but so are all of their expenses,” said Nick Haley, attorney for the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. “Even those with regular employment face costs that are too high for them to afford,” he said.

Statistics from the Eviction Lab show evictions are on the rise in 2022 and 2023 following the expiration of eviction moratoriums, pandemic protections, and COVID-19 relief funding for many families in need.

More than 204,000 households have been served with eviction notices in the Las Vegas Valley since 2020.

Haley tells FOX5 that according to statistics, Nevada still has a dire need for affordable housing. according to Nevada Housing Coalitionthe state is short 78,000 units for extremely low-income individuals; There is approximately one unit for every ten families in need.
