Celebrating Dia de los Muertos at DIA

The Detroit Institute of Arts is celebrating Death Day with a new exhibition. It partners with the Mexican Consulate of Detroit, the Southwest Detroit Business Association and the Mexicantown CDC.

We invite you to visit the public exhibition of Ofrenda altars. An ofrenda is an offering placed on a home altar during the annual traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos.

An ofrenda is usually created by family members of the deceased person and is intended to welcome the deceased to the altar.

In Mexico and other Latin American countries, Day of the Dead is a time of year to commemorate dead close relatives, friends, or community members.

Some of the displays inside the DIA will include items that are important to lost loved ones, such as favorite foods, drinks, mementos and photographs, which are collected and included in elaborate displays including Pan de muerto (bread of the dead), sugar skulls, candles. , flowers, paper picados (paper cuttings) and other decorations.

The exhibition is open until November 3, general admission is free.

Tuesday-Thursday: 9:00 – 16:00

Friday: 9:00 – 21:00

Saturday-Sunday: 10:00 – 17:00
