There’s a chance that Menendez brothers will go for free. In 1995, Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison for murder of their parentsJose and Kitty. Ryan Murphy recently adapted his story for Netflix, bringing a new perspective to the case. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story details the abuse the boys suffered and in turn caused people to question the fairness of their sentence.

Now the conversation has spread to the courtroom. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón said he supports resentencing the brothers to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Thursday, Gascon old reporters“I believe they have paid their debt to society.” A Los Angeles Superior Court judge will then consider the recommendation. The case will then go before the parole board – depending on what they decide, the brothers may be eligible for parole and released from prison.

This is a major shift in opinion, considering that the Menendez brothers were tried twice in the 90s. The first trial took place in 1993. After days of deliberation, the jury was unable to decide between manslaughter and first-degree murder, resulting in a mistrial. During the trial, the Menendez brothers claimed that their father, Jose, molested them. Their mother, Kitty, supposedly also took part in the bullying. Lyle and Eric claimed they killed their parents in self-defense, but the prosecution objected to this. In 1995, the Menendez brothers were tried again and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Lyle was initially sent to Mule Creek State Prison in Iona, California, but was transferred to Erica Prison in San Diego County in 2018. Lyle told DailyMailTV that he was glad they were reunited. “It was just a wonderful moment,” he said. “I just wasn’t sure it would ever happen.” Both brothers are married and seem to have adjusted to life behind bars. Despite this, the brother’s family is in favor of their release. Gascon said he spoke with relatives of Lyle and Eric, who say that new evidence supports allegations of abuse.

In an interview with CNNGascón further explained his decision. “I will never forgive murders, and these were brutal, premeditated murders,” he said. “They were given appropriate sentences during the trial. They received life sentences without the possibility of parole. “I just think that given the current state of the law and our assessment of their behavior in prison, they deserve the opportunity to be re-evaluated and possibly reintegrated into society.”
