“We really tried to be true to the script itself, or excuse me, the book itself, I should say, because it is such a beautiful, beautiful, perfect novella,” Murphy told the PA news agency on the red carpet on Thursday night.

“I think our biggest challenge was staying true to the book.

“And then we just wanted to tell the story tenderly and sensitively, leaving enough room for the audience to come into it and find their own path through the story.”

While the film has already won an Oscar, Murphy’s co-stars heaped praise on the film’s star.

Watson, who plays Sister Mary, told RadioTimes.com this week: “When I met him (Murphy) on set he was completely into Bill Furlong.

“So he was very, very quiet, like a simmering, you know, unexploded bomb, in a sense – he didn’t really say much, was completely self-absorbed.”

Walsh, who plays Murphy’s on-screen wife Eileen, further said: RadioTimes.com: “He adored everyone who came to the set.

“He’d say, ‘Oh wait, you’ll meet the guy playing… I worked with him 30 years ago.’

“But he’s amazing. No matter how tenuous the connection, everyone was on set for a reason, and he was also brilliant at changing hats.

“So they’d yell ‘cut’ and we’d go and take a little 10-minute break or something to reset… and he’d have to answer emails or ask someone to, you know, ask a question for the producer or something like that. .

“And there was a time and a place for this. I think he’s just been able to really assert his worth throughout all of this. But he also has this passion for this particular project. He’s very passionate.”

Little Things Like These hits cinemas in Ireland and the UK on November 1st, and in the US on November 8th.
