2024 Mexican Grand Prix – F1 Free Practice 1 Results (Mexico City)

Here are the full results from the first practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.

The first practice session ahead of this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix took place in warm conditions as drivers began to master the Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit.

Georg Russell sets the pace

At the first practice in Mexico, several teams began to tick the boxes for the requirements for young drivers, with the rules stipulating that each team must conduct a minimum of two practices during the season for drivers with two or fewer Grand Prix experience.

Mercedes handed Lewis Hamilton’s W15 to Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris was replaced by Patricio O’Ward, Zhou Guanyu missed the session in favor of Robert Schwartzman, Oliver Bierman replaced Charles Leclerc, and Felipe Drugovich drove Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin.

With the track proving to be very muddy and dusty, track conditions improved steadily throughout the session and it was Mercedes’ George Russell who set the fastest time, clocking 1:17.998 on the soft compound tyres.

This was three tenths ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Yuki Tsunoda third for VCARB.

The session was interrupted midway when Williams’ Alex Albon and Ferrari’s Olvier Biermann were involved in a collision caused by Albon losing the rear of his car due to a high-speed mid-section essay.

The red flag delayed the action for several minutes before the session resumed.

In the final minutes, Max Verstappen called on the radio to complain that he didn’t have enough power in his Honda engine, and he returned to the pits and climbed out of his RB20 with three minutes remaining.
