Although he was convicted in 1996 of two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, Eric met Tammy while he was in prison. The duo began their relationship through letters. Eventually, in 1999, they tied the knot.

Tammy published a book about her marriage to Eric. Titled They Said We Couldn’t Work: My Life with Erik MenendezTammy spoke about how they maintained their relationship despite his life in prison. She also appeared in a 2005 interview on MSNBCadmitting that she “never expected” to fall in love with Eric.

“You know, I wrote him one letter, he wrote back, and I went to visit him in prison, and our relationship developed,” Tammy explained. “And I didn’t intend to start a relationship with Eric, but it happened. And you know, I have a very good relationship with him.”

When asked how she and Eric comply with the prison system’s strict visitation rules, Tammy said it’s “very difficult.” Additionally, Tammy noted that before she and Eric got married, the New Jersey native claimed he once had a girlfriend.

During her interview, Tammy recalled that she was “sad” that Eric thought he was in a relationship with someone while he was in prison.

“He actually was – in one of his letters that he wrote to me, he wrote and said that he had a girlfriend that he had for a couple of years. And I kind of said, ‘It’s so sad that he has a girlfriend – he thinks he has a girlfriend,'” Tammy explained, before adding, “So, I understand where the public’s opinion (of our relationship) is coming from. But I get emotional support from Eric.”

When asked if Eric’s murder conviction bothered her, Tammy noted that it “made (her) doubt (herself).”

“Everyone asks me. You know: “Is she crazy?” Is she crazy? Tammy admitted, referring to how the public perceives her. “It bothers me, but I know who Eric is and I know his heart, I know his soul, and I know what happened that night. And I understand. I believe that anyone, given the right circumstances, can kill someone. I believe Eric is a very good person.”

On October 24, 2024, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón recommended that the Menendez brothers be resentenced with immediate parole if approved by the judge who will make the final decision. An insider spoke about this TMZ that if the Menendez brothers are released, Eric plans to move to Las Vegas to live with his wife Tammy.

Is Lyle Menendez married?
