Extra point for Warriors: NBA finds that missed free throw was actually converted

NEW YORK — Golden State’s blowout win over Portland on Wednesday got a little better on Thursday.

One point better, to be exact.

The NBA discovered a scoring error: the Warriors did not count a free throw that De’Anthony Melton made with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. On Thursday, the league revealed the error, changing the final score from 139-104 to 140-104.

The statisticians at the game recorded that Melton missed both free throws in this sequence, although Melton made the first.

It marked the fourth 140-point season opener in Warriors franchise history. Golden State scored 162 points—an NBA record for a game opener—against Denver in 1990, the San Francisco Warriors scored 144 points against Seattle in 1967, and San Francisco scored 140 points against Detroit” in 1962.

By any outcome, this was the most points Portland scored in the first game. The Trail Blazers lost 129 goals to Cleveland to open the 1974-75 season in four overtimes.

It was also Golden State’s biggest win in a game opener and Portland’s biggest loss to start the season. Thursday’s extra point made things a little better for the Warriors and a little worse for the Trail Blazers.

Scoring errors are rare in NBA games, with teams hiring multiple statisticians in the evenings and league officials also reviewing statistics for all contests in real time.
