New facility offers free resources for pregnant women

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – When Becky Girola was 12 years old, she says a safe place for pregnant women was just a dream.

Today, she says she smiles because of her determination and the community members who share her mission to help some of Southwest Louisiana’s most vulnerable populations.

“God gave me the responsibility of running a center like this a long time ago, and it’s just amazing to see it come to fruition, that this dream has actually come true,” Girola said.

The $1.4 million project was funded entirely by community donations and will offer new and expectant mothers free resources such as diapers, wipes, clothing, formula, ultrasounds and counseling.

“Motherhood is not shameful,” she said. “Motherhood is a beautiful thing and children are the future, so we need to make sure we love them and help the most vulnerable people in our community.”

ABC has been serving the community since 1991 and its needs have grown over the years.

Since COVID, they’ve been doing mostly everything online.

“The only real interaction we’ll get is when they pick up their supplies,” she said.

Girola said she believes the real impact is from mothers helping other mothers.

“And that’s where real change happens,” she said.
“They come together and support each other, creating this community.”

Girola hopes the facility’s location near Interstate 10 will not only be convenient for those seeking resources, but will also breathe new life into the I-10 corridor.

The facility will be located at 600 Belden St. in Lake Charles.
