Long-time ShHS volleyball coach retires; team members reflect on her legacy

MOSS BLUFF, La. (KPLC) – Volleyball season is coming to an end and things are looking good for the Sam Houston High School Lady Broncos, currently ranked No. 2 in the state.

“I really think we can peak this year and make it this year,” Lady Broncos volleyball setter Bailey Fulks said.

“Our team is very friendly. I love our chemistry, the friendships we make,” said Lady Broncos volleyball player Salem Arsenault.

Passionate celebration of the team’s dynamic playing style is not unusual. But for team coach Rene Fontenot, the applause has a different meaning this year.

“I’ve been coaching for over three decades, so this is officially my 33rd season,” Fontenot said. “I think Sam Houston wasn’t known for volleyball when I started. We were always far behind Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. But that’s not true. When we get involved, people already know who Sam Houston is, and that’s a great feeling.”

The legacy Fontenot created has inspired so many girls to play high-level volleyball. The most important part of her influence was encouraging young girls to have self-confidence.

“She made me believe in myself more. She knows I’m capable. She knows that I have the qualities and skills to become the best Libero. She believes in me and is a great coach,” Arsenault said.

Fontenot’s career has been a great success both on and off the court. Next year will be the start of a new chapter for coach and team.

“When I retire in December, I will be moving full-time to the Police Jury for Lake Charles Ward Three Recreation,” Fontenot said. “My next mission will be to improve water safety and swimming opportunities in Lake Charles.”

Meanwhile, it’s almost playoff time and this team wants to go out with a bang.

“I would say we’re getting into the last part, that’s the biggest part, and we’ve got to be determined and ready to make the playoffs,” Fontenot said.

“We’re coming for you and going to the state championship,” Faulks said.
