‘The Devil Wears Prada’ boosted Emily Blunt’s career but had the opposite effect on Stanley Tucci: ‘I didn’t realize it’

After The Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t get a job and I didn’t quite understand it, but that’s how it was. So I went and did something that I didn’t necessarily want to do, but I did it.

Tucci went on to talk about how there is a lot of space left between roles, especially after the pandemic. When asked if taking time off between projects was a conscious choice, he answered simply: “No. People just didn’t want to hire me.” Along with this, he also partly attributed this gap to working on his series. As the interview progressed, he talked more about his experience in the entertainment industry and how he feels about it. He was once quoted as saying, “You don’t get tired of doing, you get tired of waiting.” When asked to elaborate on this quote, Tucci explained:

Acting is fun. Waiting to act is no fun. You feel like you’re wasting time. Obviously, things happen that have to happen in order for you to be ready to go out and play your moment.

Hearing that Tucci had to wait for people to come to him is crazy to me, considering he has many star roles such as George Harvey in Lovely Bonesand also Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada. These two completely different characters prove that Tucci is a stellar character actor. with a wide range.

This is why it is so difficult for me to grasp the fact that the long gaps between roles are not due to the fact that he himself does not want to work, but because he goes through long periods of waiting for the next role to appear. He also spoke about this in an interview:

You never know what that time will be like, so you can’t really commit yourself to anything, and you have to stay in this emotional and intellectual purgatory until they say, “Okay, we’re ready for you,” and then you you can go. This way you save your energy. You can’t devote yourself to anything other than crossword puzzles or Instagram.

It’s hard to imagine someone so talented just sitting idly by. However, it just goes to show that acting is a job after all; and unfortunately, some of the most qualified people just have to sit back and wait for the job to come to them.

It sucks and I don’t understand it in its entirety, but that’s how the cookie crumbles. The best thing we as viewers can do is support our favorite stars.
