Martha Stewart has revealed she kissed a stranger in a cathedral while on honeymoon with her now ex-husband Andrew Stewart.

In the upcoming Netflix documentary “Martha” 83-year-old lifestyle maven recalled that she and Andrew, who tied the knot in 1961, decided to go on a five-month honeymoon to Europe after their wedding.

During an on-camera interview with director RJ Cutler, Stewart recalled that the former couple arrived in Florence, Italy the night before Easter. The TV presenter explained that she visited Florence’s famous Duomo alone while Andrew stayed in their hotel room.

“He had no interest in going to the Duomo with me,” Stewart said of her ex-husband. “Listening to this amazing music in the cathedral… It was a very romantic place, crowded with tourists, and I met this very handsome guy.”

She continued: “He didn’t know I was married. I was a street girl hanging out in the cathedral on Easter Eve. He was emotional. I was emotional. Simply because it was an emotional place. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Extensive dome. The paintings around you are so beautiful.”

“It was like nothing I had ever done before,” Stewart added. “So why not kiss a stranger?”

“Do you know what word I’m looking for?” – asked Cutler.

“Naughty?” Stewart replied.

“Was it disobedience or infidelity?” – asked the director.

“Neither,” Stewart said. “It was neither mischief nor betrayal. It was just an emotional moment. That’s how I looked at it. And it was exciting because, I mean, it was a very emotional place. I wish we could all experience an evening like this.”

Stuart and Andrew met in 1960 after his sister set them up on a blind date. At the time, she was studying at Barnard College in New York, and he was a 23-year-old student at Yale Law School.

In the documentary, Stewart, who grew up in a middle-class family in Nutley, New Jersey, recalls being impressed when Andrew drove her to her first date in a yellow Mercedes sedan.

“I’ve never driven in a Mercedes before,” she said. “We went to dinner. He was very polite and handsome, and he traveled a lot. This was interesting for me, a sophisticated young man. And he had an American Express card, which was very important in those days.” And he was just intriguing and playful and sweet. By the end of dinner I was madly in love.”

Stewart recalled that she visited Andrew every weekend while he attended Yale University, and she had never slept with a man before her future husband. They tied the knot after dating for a year.

Speaking with Cutler, Stewart recalled that she was amazed by the sights and cuisine of Europe and dreaded their return to New York after their honeymoon.

“I was 19 years old and I didn’t want to go home,” Stewart explained. “We returned to New York and reality crashed in.”

Stewart and the publisher welcomed their only child. daughter Alexis, in 1965. In the documentary, the businesswoman admitted that she initially had mixed feelings about motherhood.

“Back then everyone had babies at such a young age,” Stewart said. “It was kind of a style and I thought it was natural. But it turns out that being a mother is completely unnatural.”

Andrew and Stuart separated in 1987 and officially filed for divorce in 1990. In an interview with Cutler during the documentary, Stewart recalled that Andrew had numerous affairs during their marriage and revealed that she was also unfaithful to him.

“He wasn’t satisfied at home,” Stewart said of Andrew. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think there were a lot of them.”

“Young women, take my advice: if you’re married and your husband starts cheating on you, he’s a piece of crap,” she said. “Get out of this marriage.”

“But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t leave,” she admitted.

“Didn’t you two have an affair at the very beginning of the relationship?” – asked Cutler.

“Yeah, but I don’t think Andy ever knew that,” Stewart replied.

“He said he knew about it,” Cutler said.

“He did?” – asked Martha.

“Yes, you confessed to him,” Cutler replied. “He says he didn’t end the marriage until you told him you were already separated.”

“Oh, that’s not true. I don’t think so,” Stewart replied.

“But what happened?” – asked Cutler. “You were having an affair.”

“I had a very short affair with a very attractive Irishman,” Stewart shared. “And it was just nothing. It was nothing. In terms of… it would never have ruined the marriage. I would never end my marriage over this.”

“It was nothing,” she repeated. – Nothing. It was like kissing in a cathedral.

In “March” Stewart also accused Andrew of cheating on her with her former assistant Robyn Fairclough.

“Robin was working for me and lost her apartment or something,” she recalls.

Stewart said she told Fairclough she could move into a shed on the property the cookbook author shared with Andrew.

“When I was traveling, Andy met her,” Stewart said. “It’s like I made Andy a snack.”

When asked if she had confronted Fairclough, Stewart confirmed that she had and “immediately kicked her out”.

“You know what the hell you’re doing? Andy betrayed me. Right on our property,” Stewart said.

“Not good,” she added.

Three years after his divorce from Martha, Andrew married Fairclough, 21 years his junior, in May 1993. However, they later divorced.

Andrew is currently married to Shyla Stewart. According to the company’s website, Shyla is the president and CEO of Fieldstone Publishing, and Andrew is its publisher emeritus. According to People magazine, the couple has five children.

Stewart has not remarried, although she was in a relationship with billionaire Charles Simonyi for 15 years until they split in 2008. During a 2022 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Stewart revealed that she previously dated Anthony Hopkins but broke up with him because she “couldn’t stop thinking of him as Hannibal Lecter.”

Hopkins played serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 horror thriller The Silence of the Lambs and won an Oscar for his role.

In a recent interview with magazine “People” Stewart said she and Andrew haven’t spoken in two decades.

“I haven’t spoken to him in over 20 years,” she told the publication. “Sad.”

“Martha” will be available to stream on Netflix on Wednesday.
