The youngest US President was also the first American to receive the Nobel Prize.

To date, the United States has had 46 presidents, with 45 men holding the position. According to Article Two of the US Constitution, a person must be at least 35 years of age to be eligible to hold office.

The youngest person to serve as President of the United States is Theodore Roosevelt. He took office at age 42 in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He was the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He is considered one of the greatest American presidents.

Roosevelt’s personal life was quite tragic. His first wife died two days after giving birth to their daughter from kidney failure in February 1884. On the same day, Roosevelt’s mother Martha also died of typhoid fever. He remarried on December 2, 1886.

He previously served as the 33rd Governor of New York for two years, taking office in 1898. He later assumed the role of Vice President under President McKinley for six months in 1901.

Roosevelt was behind the initiation of the construction of the Panama Canal. He appointed John Findlay Wallace as chief engineer of the Panama Canal project. However, he resigned due to a number of logistical problems.

Roosevelt became the first American to win a Nobel Prize when he was awarded the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Russo-Japanese War.

He was a leader of the progressive movement and championed the domestic policy of the Quad Accord. It aimed at justice for all citizens, breaking bad trusts, regulating railroads, and clean food and medicine. He also worked to preserve national parks, monuments and forests.

Roosevelt was elected to a full term in 1904 and wanted William Howard Taft to succeed him in 1908. However, it didn’t work and he became disillusioned with his way of working. He attempted the Republican presidential nomination in 1912 but failed.

He then founded the new Progressive Party and ran for President in 1912. However, this time Democrat Woodrow Wilson won.

Roosevelt went on a four-month expedition to the Amazon. Here he contracted a tropical disease and almost died. His health began to deteriorate and he died in 1919.
