India scores late to beat New Zealand

New Zealand eventually broke through the Indian defense in the 17th minute when Jonty Elms kicked a fine field goal to level the scores. But India responded quickly with Rohit hitting a field goal to restore the momentum and lead 2-1 in the 17th minute.

Both teams played the match with breakneck speed in attack, showed exciting hockey and were on par with each other in the following minutes. While India created a flurry of PKs towards the end of the second quarter, they were unable to make progress in extending their lead.

To their disappointment, New Zealand started the third quarter with some fine play from Jonty Elms, who struck for the second time. His shot was not stopped by India goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh. Jonty’s brilliance in his dragflick was a sore point for the Indian defense as he completed a hat-trick in the 45th minute to take New Zealand’s lead to 3-2 going into the final quarter.

India’s penalty killing problems continued in the fourth quarter as they missed a chance in the 46th minute. Meanwhile, New Zealand led 3-2 and mounted brilliant counter-attacks in the ensuing minutes, but the Indian defense held on, knowing that conceding another goal would hurt their chances of reaching the final.

With 90 seconds left, India found a golden opportunity to level the score by getting a PK. This time they finally managed to succeed thanks to a superb variation executed to perfection by Talem Priyobarta, ending a thrilling encounter with a 3-3 draw.
