Frost Report for Central PA. Sunday.

Frost Report for Central PA. Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued a frost warning at 10:52 a.m. Saturday, effective Sunday from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. for Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams, York and Lancaster counties.

The Met Office says: “Frost will form at temperatures below 33 degrees.”

“Frosts and freezes can kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing fixtures. Frost can damage sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may die if left unprotected,” the weather service says. “Take protective measures now as freezing temperatures can damage or kill tender plants and vegetation. Those involved in farming must protect sensitive vegetation. Freezing temperatures near the ground can kill uncovered, sensitive outdoor vegetation. Frosts will occur mainly in the valleys.”

Frost warning – that’s what it means

Frost warnings are issued from May through October (but may be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover are favorable for frost development. This most often occurs when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, frosts are so severe that they end the growing season, and are then called “killing frosts.”

According to the weather service, if a frost warning is issued for your area, cover sensitive plants before sunset to help retain heat near the plants, or if possible, move plants indoors overnight.
