AP preview:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Texas Longhorns and the Vanderbilt Commodores are finally playing each other in football for the first time in nearly a century.

The stakes have never been higher.

The No. 5 Longhorns (6-1, 2-1 SEC) visited Music City on Saturday looking to avoid back-to-back losses in their new league. They come due to No. 25 Vanderbilt (5-2, 2-1) in the SEC standings and need a win to stay on track for a berth in the league title game and the 12-team field. College Football Playoff.

Texas, which reached the national semifinals last season, is coming out of control. Lost to Georgia 30-15. this knocked them out of first place in the AP Top 25.

“From here on out, it really feels like we’re in the SEC championship game,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “Every game matters and we have to play in Atlanta.”

Texas safety Michael Taaffe said the Longhorns remain confident that everything they want is still to come.

“If we worried about that, we would be taking our attention away from Vanderbilt, and they deserve our attention,” Taaffe said.

Vanderbilt certainly does. The program best known as the SEC’s “Perpetual Cellar Dweller” could also find a home in Atlanta. Coach Clark Lee wants his Commodores to make the most of it. upset then-No. 1 Alabamawhich marked Vanderbilt’s first win in 61 games against a top-five team.

Texas would be another big loss for Vanderbilt.

“We will fight together to get as far as possible,” Lea said.

The Guardian’s Riddle

Sargsyan insists there is no disagreement between the defenders, but he clearly has a conundrum. Questions about the starter Quinn Evers the nagging tension in my stomach, the poor play of the last two games and when to go with Arch Manning hanging over the offense.

Evers was briefly benched in last week’s loss to Georgia. Manning has only two offensive series, but he has two previous wins as a starter, including the SEC opener against Mississippi State. He has nine touchdowns this season. How quickly can Sarkisian get Evers out if he gets into trouble again?

Slow start

The Longhorns have been slow coming out of the gate lately. Texas has scored just one first-quarter touchdown in its last three games and has not played in the last two. Texas also was just 2-for-14 on third down against Georgia and 1-for-5 on fourth down.

Pavia sets the tone

Lea took advantage of the transfer portal to update his squad and coaching staff. The biggest innovation was the defender Diego Pavia. The graduate transfer from New Mexico State leads Vanderbilt to lead the SEC and rank 11th in the country, holding the ball 33 minutes per game.

‘The Dores also lead the SEC, converting 52.1% of third downs, and Pavia was picked off once. That propelled Vandy to the No. 1 spot among Power Four programs this season, and the Commodores led the SEC with just two turnovers down.

“He’s definitely the straw that stirs the drink for them in the run game and in the passing game,” Sarkisian said of Pavia. “He definitely instilled a competitive and winning spirit into this team. We will have to work hard to protect him.

Line of battle

Texas has one of the most experienced offensive lines around, with left tackle Calvin Banks likely to be a first-round pick in next April’s NFL Draft. The entire team struggled against the Georgia pass, giving up seven sacks, two of which resulted in fumbles. Banks gave up his first sack since the first game of 2023.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have the same defensive talent as Georgia. Lee, a former defensive coordinator at Notre Dame who runs this defense, has no doubt picked up ideas on how to put pressure on Texans defensive backs.

Drive

Texas plays its first road game with the SEC in the league’s smallest stadium, with capacity further limited as the south zone is still under construction as part of Vanderbilt’s first major renovation since 1981.

The Longhorns played Mississippi State and Georgia at home and also played Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Vanderbilt usually gives the visiting team a home-field advantage. But the Commodores are 4-0 at home since victory over Virginia Tech in overtime and that defeat in Alabama on October 5th. The fans must be in full force.
