The Miami Dolphins make more quarterback moves…and two roster raises

Saturday’s performance by the Miami Dolphins included the usual practice roster moves, but most of all, it provided a lot of answers at the quarterback position.

To sum it up, Tua Tagovailoa is officially on the 53-man roster.Skylar Thompson will be his only backup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, with C.J. Beathard replacing Tim Boyle as the third option.

The Dolphins’ actions on Saturday included:

The move with Overton was almost automatic as Blake Ferguson was still expected to miss at least the next three games while on the pitch. Reserve/non-football illness list. Moving with Pharrell was also almost a given because a gruesome injury that will sideline quarterback Zach Zieler, at least for this game..

After Tagovailoa moved to the 53-man injured reserve (IR) roster, he was promoted to doubtful The final injury report was removed as expected.

Boyle’s decision was not surprising; in fact, we mentioned this earlier this week, along with the possibility Tyler Huntley is assigned to IR. And now both have happened.

This will leave the Dolphins vulnerable to Arizona in the event of a real upset because they won’t have a backup third back. For now, the Dolphins have decided to use two QBs on the 53-man roster, and NFL rules dictate that a player must be on the active roster to serve as a backup third quarterback.

From there, it still seems strange that the Dolphins didn’t sign Overton to the active roster because he can only be taken off the practice squad three times. He’ll have to sign with the 53s anyway to be able to play a fourth straight game, which would be a Monday night game against the Los Angeles Rams on November 11th.

Naming Thompson as the backup quarterback seemed like a logical outcome from the start, given the position he held heading into the regular season. Huntley is injured and Boyle simply didn’t do his job when given the opportunity to play.

Beathard’s arrival just this week puts him well behind Thompson, although we say he could overtake him at some point or at least join him on the active roster.

Another interesting decision will come when Huntley becomes eligible to come off IR — after the game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 17 — but at least the conundrum for the Arizona game will be solved.
