Five people displaced, firefighter rescued after two-alarm house fire in Ocean City, New Jersey

Many residents were forced from their homes and a firefighter was rescued after a two-alarm fire at a home in Ocean City, New Jersey, on Saturday morning, according to the Ocean City Fire Department.

Fire officials said crews responded to a report of a structure fire near East 16th Street and West Avenue before 8:30 a.m. The initial 911 call indicated two people were possibly trapped, officials said.

One person was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation and one firefighter was rescued from the second-floor deck after a propane tank valve failed, causing a massive fire, according to the report.

All residents were able to leave the house safely.

The fire was upgraded to two-alarm after crews reported a heavy fire in the rear of the home.

The fire was brought under control around 9:14 a.m. and fire officials said five people were forced to evacuate their homes.

The firefighter was not injured, and assistance was provided by the Margate Fire Department, Marmora Volunteer Fire Company and Uptown Ambulance.

The Red Cross and Ocean City Emergency Management are helping displaced residents find shelter.

The Ocean City Fire Department, Ocean City Police and the Cape May County Fire Department are investigating the incident.
