East Palestine disappointed by feds’ response to train crash, but private businesses step up

Nearly two years ago, the town of East Palestine, Ohio, experienced a huge tragedy that resulted in a shortage of clean drinking water, causing businesses and everyday Americans to rush to help the community while the government failed to do so.

On February 3, 2023, a train of more than 100 cars carrying toxic materials derailed near an Ohio city, causing a mass evacuation.

The Ohio Department of Health had to open a health clinic in East Palestine to help victims of toxic chemicals from the Norfolk train crash.

As a result of the crash, many residents in the area breathed dirty air and did not have clean drinking water.

Entrepreneur Nelson McIlveen used his company Sentry H2O to provide clean water to people in need in East Palestine.

The incident has drawn scrutiny from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for his seemingly lackadaisical response to the incident.

Biden visited East Palestine about a year after the crash and appeared to receive a cold reception. some residents.

“We have people in Washington who care more about foreign countries and foreign citizens than about American citizens,” Moreno said. “It took Joe Biden a year to even show up there. Kamala Harris has never been there. The federal government’s response has been completely inadequate.”

East Palestine businessman DJ Yokeley said he saw many businesses damaged by the crash.

“My business was located on an area that sat above a sulfur bed and was one of the polluted streams in our city,” Yokeley said in the special. “The EPA couldn’t tell us if we were safe. The various organizations we contacted could not tell us whether we were safe or not. They refused to tell us. So we kind of had to make our own decision and we had to leave what was our first building.”

Yokeley is in charge sports online business in Ohio and praised McIlveen for his efforts to bring clean water to East Palestine.

“We’re so grateful to Nelson and Sentry H2O for coming out and doing this because they didn’t have to,” he said. “He’s not doing this as a political or business stunt because he sees that Americans need it.”

While the government failed the people living in small town Ohio, Americans stepped up when they were needed.

“That’s what America is all about,” Yokeley said. “People care about people (and) Americans, care about Americans, instead of looking beyond our borders and making sure they are served before the people who pay taxes and take care of the red, white and blue.”
