How did Wordle come about?

Wordle began as a small family game created by software engineer Josh Wardle. He created the game so he and his partner could play a fun word game together during the pandemic, and they quickly realized there was something very special about this simple guessing game. So, after some minor revisions, Wardle published it on his website. Language of power.

The game was released in October 2021 and had two million daily players by the end of the year. The game became a viral hit, thanks in large part to the ease with which players could share their scores without spoilers on Twitter and other social networks. In January 2022, Wardle accepted an offer from the New York Times to acquire Wordle for a seven-figure sum. Well done Mr Wardle. Really well done.

You You can enter any words you want, but keep in mind that the actual answer will never be a rude word.

What words are prohibited in Wordle?

You can enter almost any five-letter word in English and Wordle will take it as a guess. However, the answer is selected each day from a much smaller list of the most common five-letter words. Of course, there are thousands more possible answers, but that means the answer will never be an obscure word like, say, “THIOL” or “KAIRD” or “MALIK” (yes, those are all real words).

There are very rare words that the New York Times chooses not to publish as a Wordle answer for the day, perhaps for reasons related to recent news or politics. For example, shortly after it was reported that Roe v. Wade might be overturned in the United States, the New York Times decided to change the word on March 30 from “FETUS” to “SHINE” because it was believed that the word “fetus” “too political. accused word in the context of recent events.

The New York Times has also tried to never allow words they consider rude to be the answer to a Wordle puzzle. But, of course, there is nothing stopping you from using even the dirtiest words as guesses, as long as they are accepted in the dictionary and you understand that they will never be the answer.

Is Wordle getting too simple for you?

If Wordle is getting too easy, there are a few ways you can make the game more challenging for yourself. The first option is to enable Hard Mode. You can do this on the Wordle website by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. Hard mode means that any highlighted letters must be used in all future assumptions. This prevents you from using the usual tactic of picking two words, such as OUNCE and PAIN, to test all five vowels early on.

You can take things to the next level by playing with the so-called “super hard” rules. This means that every guess you enter must could potentially be the answer. If you were just playing on hard mode and you typed “WET” and the letter “O” turned yellow, then there was nothing stopping you from typing “POLAR” as the next word, even though it couldn’t be the answer because you already know that the letter “O” is in the wrong place. If you are playing with “ultra-complex” rules, this is prohibited. You must stick to every clue and make sure that every word you enter is potentially an answer.

If after all this Wordle is still too simple for you, you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired online games that have popped up over the past year. One of our favorites Mierlein which you have to guess the country of the world based on its shape. There are also Waferwhich consists of replacing letters in a completed grid to complete all words; Movidlwhich shows you the entire movie in a tiny amount of time and challenges you to guess the movie in six tries; And Quordlein which you have to solve four words at the same time with the same guesses.
