A 19-year-old girl who fell from a boat into the ocean on Saturday night was rescued after being adrift for 12 hours.

Nguyen Ngoc Kim Thi was discovered by a fisherman about 8 a.m. Sunday, about six nautical miles (11 kilometers) from where she fell in waters off the central province of Binh Thuan. She was brought ashore and taken to a local medical center for evaluation.

A Phu Quy island district spokesman confirmed that Thi’s life jacket played a key role in her survival. Authorities continue to search for another missing person, 19-year-old Can Hoang Minh Nam.

On Saturday afternoon, a group of six tourists arrived at Phu Quy Island and took two boats out to sea about 200 meters from the shore. Around 6 p.m., strong winds and waves swept away the group.

Hotel staff then used motorboats to rescue them and managed to take the three away. The others in the same boat were carried away.

The tourist managed to swim to the shore at night, about a kilometer from the scene of the incident.

The search for the missing tourist continues.

Phu Quy Island is located approximately 104 km from Phan Thiet. This is a popular tourist destination.
