Firefighters rescued a man who fell from a pier into the Fox River, as well as a second man who tried to rescue a victim in McHenry Saturday night.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 5:10 p.m. Saturday to the 1400 block of North River Road in McHenry for a report of a water rescue.

McHenry County Fire Battalion Chief David Harwood said two subjects were reported to be in the Fox River and unable to get out.

Firefighters arrived four minutes later to find two adult males clinging to a pier in the Fox River.

Rescuers entered the water wearing cold water rescue gear and rescued both victims, Harwood said.

One of the men was immediately taken to a waiting ambulance and treated for hypothermia.

He was taken to Northwestern Medical Hospital in McHenry in good condition. The second man refused treatment and transportation.

Harwood said it was learned that one of the men accidentally fell from the pier into the water.

The second man jumped into the water to try to help him.

Neither man was able to escape the river due to the cold water temperature, Harwood said.
