Matthew Perry’s mom cries because she ‘couldn’t help him’ before his death

Matthew Perry’s mum, Suzanne Morrison, was emotional as she recalled her son’s years-long battle with addiction before his passing. death last year.

Suzanne and her husband, Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, sat down with Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie to discuss Perry’s life in interview published on Monday.

Later in the interview, Suzanne became emotional when she thought about Perry. fight against addiction decades before his death and his struggle for sobriety.

“The only thing I have to learn is that it’s very hard to do, and that’s… You have to stop blaming yourself because it’s tearing you apart,” she admitted.

Suzanne and Keith, married since 1981, recalled receiving a call on October 28, 2023, telling them the Friends actor had died.

“Someone called Suzanne and he just said, ‘Matthew is dead,'” Keith, 77, shared, while Suzanne chimed in, saying the person on the phone said, “Matthew is dead.” Your son is dead.”

The couple also reflected on Perry’s life and how he “lit up the room” but struggled with their thoughts.

“I think he was also very lonely at heart,” Suzanne said, while Keith added that his stepson was “an insecure, often very sad guy.”

Shortly before his death, Perry “went through a period” where he was have more meaningful conversations with my mom.

“He came up to me and said, ‘I love you so much and I’m so happy to be with you now.’ … It was almost like a premonition or something,” Suzanne shared.

“How long has it been since we had a conversation like this? Years have passed,” she recalled thinking.

Suzanne went on to say that she felt “the inevitability of what was going to happen around him.”

Perry was 54 years old when he died in a hot bath at home in Los Angeles last year. The cause of his death was later found to be acute effects of ketaminewith drowning and coronary heart disease being contributing factors.

Before his death, the 17 Again star said he was sober, but told his family he was sober too. use of ketamine – an anesthetic used to treat depression and pain – to help him overcome his addiction.

“We didn’t know how much he was taking,” Keith admitted, later adding that it “didn’t turn into something he couldn’t control.”

Keith said he “thought” Perry was sober, but Suzanne disagreed.

“Friends, Lovers and the Big Bad Thing” author’s use of ketamine the “spiral(ed) is reportedly out of control” a few months before his sudden death.

Since then, five people, including two doctors and Perry’s personal assistant, were charged with conspiracy to distribute ketamine in connection with his death.
