UN chief condemns ‘horrific levels of death, injury and destruction’ in northern Gaza Strip

UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was “shocked by the appalling levels of death, injury and destruction” in the northern Gaza Strip, where Israel has launched a new attack that he says is aimed at preventing a resurgence of Hamas.

In a statement, the secretary-general’s spokesman said Israeli authorities had rejected “repeated attempts” to deliver “essential” humanitarian supplies.

Mr. Guterres warns that “widespread destruction and deprivation” from the Israeli offensive “is making the living conditions of the Palestinian population there intolerable,” the statement said.

“This conflict continues to be fought with little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law,” he continued.

All sides must “respect and protect civilians” and ensure they do not impede humanitarian efforts, Mr. Guterres said.
