Macon County Little Texas Community Receives Safe Space Grant

LITTLE TEXAS, Alabama (WSFA) – Little Texas is about to get a little safer.

The community’s volunteer fire department received a grant of more than $100,000 from FEMA to build a safe space in case of natural disasters.

According to the approval letter, the room will be 24 feet long, 10 feet wide and 8 feet high.

This is a security measure that hits close to home, since back in 2019 the nearby village Beauregard it was hit by an EF-4 tornado, killing several people.

“If these people in Beauregard had something like we were coming, it would have saved a lot of lives,” fire department business manager Dr. Willie Kirk Jr. said. “The shelter would accommodate 48 people with two disabilities. there plus a toilet.

The safe room will be secured with a combination lock that will allow all firefighters to open the room at any time, rather than having to fumble for a key during an emergency.

Work will begin once Macon County officials approve the project and accept the application.
