Westlake Honors Former Recreation Director: Westshore Briefs

The City of Westlake recently installed and dedicated a park bench on the grounds of the recreation center near the pond to honor the legacy of former city employee Steve Applegate.

He served the City of Westlake for 14 years. Applegate began his career in 1988 and served as recreation director from 1998, when the Westlake Recreation Center opened, until 2002. During the opening ceremony, Mayor Dennis Clough emphasized how Applegate played an integral role in the planning process and opening of the recreation center. .

Applegate’s daughter Lauren died in May, and a group of family friends donated a magnolia tree that was planted near the bench in her memory. Her favorite color was purple, and in the spring purple flowers would bloom on the tree.

BAY VILLAGE

Winter Activities, Holiday Shop: Registration is now open for winter classes for adults and children at BAYArts. Programs include ceramics, painting, jewelry and writing.

Scholarships are also available to attend classes through a newly created fund created through the BAYarts Friends Auxiliary Council.

PBIS Awards: All five Bay Village School District buildings were recognized for implementing PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) programs, including Bronze status for Glenview Child Care and Learning Center, Bay Middle School and Bay High School (in first year of participation), Silver status. status for Westerly Primary School and Gold status for Normandy Primary School.

ROCKY RIVER

Exhibition of patchwork and crafts: The 34th annual Harvest Craft and Quilt Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 1-2 at the Senior Center, 21014 Hilliard Blvd. Admission is $8 for two days and $5 for one day. There will be a variety of musical entertainment on site. The tea tasting will take place at 9:30 am on November 2.

Leaf collection: Bulk leaf collection will begin on November 4th. Until then, please place leaves in trash bags in your yard for collection.

During fall leaf collection, service and leaf removal trucks will operate to make one pass throughout the city each week, but this may not always be possible. According to information posted on the city’s website, occasional delays occur due to weather, equipment or large amounts of leaves.

Leaf collection may not coincide with residents’ trash collection dates. Residents can monitor daily leaf development by following the Rocky River Maintenance Department on Facebook, follow the link facebook.com/rockyriverservice.

As a reminder, you should rake leaves in lawns with trees and make sure the piles are easily accessible. Leaves should not be left outside as they can clog drains and create a traffic hazard. In addition, cars should not block citizens’ access to leaves on a tree lawn.

Place yard waste such as brush, garden items and grass clippings in a brown bag so they can be picked up on your regular trash pickup day. These items should not be included in the leaf kit as they may cause clogging to our leaf collection equipment.

Welcome service: Last week, Rocky River High School celebrated Appreciation of Service Week before the Oct. 25 football game against Bay Village High School.

Highlights of the week included flags being displayed along Detroit Road to Rocky River High School Stadium, and the dedication of a place of honor at the stadium for POWs and MIA prior to a football game.

The seat, which is part of Jr. Henry Ward’s Eagle Scout Project, is specifically marked to serve as a visual reminder to honor veterans/POWs/MIAs and the sacrifices they made during their service. Veterans and active military personnel were also recognized at the game.

New restaurant: Renovations continue at the former Chase Bank building, 21810 Center Ridge Road, for a new Scramblers restaurant.

Tony D’Agostino is opening the Rocky River location, which will join his other two west side locations in North Olmsted and Strongsville. Joining Mentor, Mayfield Heights and Belden Village, this new location will be his sixth restaurant in the Greater Cleveland area.

If construction continues on schedule, he hopes to open the Rocky River location the first week of January.

Shout out: Rocky River High School’s volleyball teams raised more than $6,000 earlier this month during the Volley for the Cure event to donate to breast cancer research.

The eighth grade team also captured the Cleveland West Conference (CWC) tournament title.

Annual Holiday Award: Westlake Town Criers are accepting nominations for the Mr. and Mrs. Westlake Awards. This award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the well-being of the youth and citizens of Westlake.

The couple will be announced during the city’s annual tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by Westlake Town Criers, at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at City Hall.

Library overview: Westlake-Porter Public Library officials are seeking public input on technology programs at the library.

“We plan to evaluate the first round of surveys for technology program planning in the near future, but this will be an ongoing survey to continually analyze and assess technology needs at the library,” Elaine Willis, library communications specialist, said in an email. “We plan to keep the survey active indefinitely.”

Shout out: Congratulations to Westlake Police Lt. Brian Pasty, who officially retired after 36 years of service.

Pasty began his career as a patrol officer and over the years took on the key responsibilities of trainer, sergeant, accident investigator and detective bureau commander. His leadership expanded when he became a Special Forces commander and played the role of founder and leader of the department’s drone unit.
