A Wauconda man has died after he was critically injured when a utility pole toppled, destroying his truck near Antioch Monday afternoon, the sheriff said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Antioch Fire Protection District responded to the area of ​​West Grass Lake Road and Broadway Avenue in unincorporated Antioch about 1:10 p.m. Monday for a vehicle crash with injuries.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Christopher Covelli, deputies arrived to find a single-vehicle crash involving a heavily damaged GMC Sierra.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the GMC was traveling westbound on Grass Lake Road when it left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The GMC hit a utility pole and overturned. Covelli said. The pole and wires were demolished.

The driver of the car, a 37-year-old Wauconda resident, had already been pulled from the car by passersby when emergency crews arrived. Covelli said.

He suffered serious injuries and LifeNet requested a medical helicopter.

When the helicopter arrived, the man was too unstable to be transported to the plane.

A medical helicopter crew helped paramedics transport him by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Covelli said the 37-year-old man died in hospital from his injuries.

The Lake County coroner plans to perform an autopsy on the victim, whose identity has not been released.

Grass Lake Road was closed for several hours until Monday evening.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Team.
