Cappu Films launches Busan films “A Drop of Water” and “The Way It Is”

Psychological thriller”Water drop“, won two awards at the Busan Film Festival earlier this month, and the crime comedy “The Way It Is” was a contender in the Jisuk Award category.

Cappu was founded by independent filmmaker Janice Wu in 2018 and has offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Los Angeles. It targets emerging filmmakers, genre films and television with global appeal, and has operations spanning international sales and distribution. Wu heads the sales team in Tokyo from October 30 to November 1.

The coming-of-age thriller A Drop of Water is the debut feature film from Korean director Choi Jeongyeon. It tells the story of a 13-year-old girl, Soo-yeon, who is left alone after the death of her grandmother. Faced with the fact that if she doesn’t find a guardian, she will be placed in a kindergarten, Soo-yeon spots a powerful couple who have adopted a seven-year-old girl named Song-yul and plunged into happiness. Soo Young tries to get closer to Song Yul, but finds the other girl’s behavior increasingly suspicious.

Earlier this month, the film won the Chorokbaem Media Award for New Directors in Korean Cinema and the CGK Cinematography Award in Busan, and was praised by the jury for its “edgy yet subtle direction” and the depth of the young actors’ performances that “adds to the surprise.” to the film.” At the stage of the project, “A Drop of Water” previously won the Korean Film Council’s script competition in 2022.

“The Way It Is” by Korean director Lee Haram follows the journey of a young couple who are in love with each other but drive around committing murders. Described by Busan programmers as a “bizarre and unique hybrid world (that) cannot be compared to anything else,” the film is a genre-defying blend of serial killer horror, road movie, comedy and romance.

Lee’s 2022 debut Beyond was previously invited to the Vision section of the Busan International Film Festival and won awards at the Busan Independent Film Festival and the Seoul Independent Film Festival. His 2023 feature The Forgotten Soldier was invited to the Busan Independent Film Festival. “The Way It Is” is his third feature film.

Cappu Films’ TIFFCOM slate also includes Chinese pop phenom Zhang Zhehan’s cycling documentary August, about the fallout from the cyber media storm that stalled his acting career; Korean sports drama Let’s Go! “Snails,” which sheds light on the world of wheelchair basketball; Korean psychological horror film “Stink” about a group of ambitious young people on an educational retreat who try to hide a mysterious death; and independent director Vivian Kerr’s debut feature, Crowbar, a heartfelt drama set in Los Angeles about motherhood, womanhood and reconciliation.
