New police chief ready to lead Jupiter

The Jupiter Police Department is set to welcome a new chief on Wednesday.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Barbera will be officially sworn in as the new police chief after David England retires from the force.

Dozens of residents had the opportunity to meet Barbera one-on-one at an informal community event at the Jupiter Community Center, where he shared his vision for the department. Barbera emphasized the importance of community participation and transparency.

“I am honored to serve as Chief of Police and serve the citizens of Jupiter. I love this city. I love this police department. I am thrilled to continue the legacy of the Chiefs before me,” said Michael Barbera.

Barbera, who joined the department in 1996, has deep ties to the community and has risen through the ranks in various patrol and detective assignments, most recently serving as deputy chief.

During the “Contact the Council” event, Barbera discussed his leadership goals, which include combating ongoing fraud and cybercrime while keeping violence levels low. He emphasized that a strong partnership between the police department and the community is key to keeping Jupiter safe.

“We continually ask for feedback from the community so we can better serve them,” he said.

In addition to meeting the new police chief, residents were also able to meet the new fire chief Darrell Donatto.

Last year, the city voted to end its 40-year relationship with the county, surprising many residents. Donatto assured the community of a smooth transition.

“Palm Beach County has done a great job. There is no doubt about it,” Donatto said.

He talked about the construction of two new fire stations, one near Sinques Park on Indiantown Road and the other across from the Intracoastal Waterway on U.S. 1.

“On October 1, 2026, when you call 911, Jupiter residents will receive service from their own fire and rescue department,” Donatto added.

Public safety was not the only theme of the event. Residents also took a close look at the road and recreational projects being developed. Vice Mayor Malis Sanstrom shared updates on various projects, including improving traffic flow and replacing playgrounds.

“This year alone we are investing $10 million in our recreation budget,” Sunstrom noted. “We are replacing all 12 playgrounds and will start with four next year.”

Sunstrom said the playgrounds will include zip lines, splash pads and slides.

City leaders hope to host more events like this to keep the community informed and involved.

As for Barbera, his official swearing-in ceremony will take place in the Council Chambers on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
