A women’s shelter will be built in the Kvartalov area

The City of Edmonton is one step closer to building 19 transitional housing units for women.

On Wednesday, the Edmonton City Council executive committee agreed to sell the land to Edmonton City Center Church Scotland (E4C) for $1,000 in the Quarters area near the city center.

“They have been great neighbors and their new building will continue to serve the people of Edmonton in the same way, but they will bring administrative staff into the office that will add a lot of activity and vibrancy to the area,” said Ward O. day’min Coun. Anne Stevenson spoke at City Hall.

The land, located next to Kinistino Park, is worth about $3 million. It is also home to the residence of Joseph Reid, which is listed as an Edmonton Historic Resource.

The building, built in 1912, has no official designation and is not protected.

E4C plans to demolish the building to make way for a new shelter and affordable housing. The project will also become the organization’s new headquarters, employing 100 employees.

“We understand that you want to be part of the community and steward of the park,” said E4C Chief Executive Officer Barbara Spencer. “We want the community and the seniors living at the Chinese Seniors Home to feel really comfortable when they walk out the front door.”

The project is also expected to further develop neighborhoods where the city has spent about $100 million on infrastructure such as a nearby park and LRT stop.

E4C will decide early next year whether to proceed with construction.
