Highland Park death raises questions after unidentified man found in abandoned house

HIGHLAND PARK, Michigan. – An unidentified man was found inside an abandoned home in Highland Park.

The man was found Tuesday, October 15 at 4:45 p.m. in the 342 block of Avenue de Genève.

Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said the Highland Park Police Department contacted the MSP Second District Special Investigation Section regarding the man who was found in the abandoned house which, at one point, was on fire.

Shaw said the unidentified man was found dead in the basement of the home.

“We’re canvassing the neighborhood, checking Ring cameras and looking for witnesses,” Shaw said. “We also have a fingerprint scanner on the way with some of our evidence technicians to move forward and try to identify this man.”

MSP said they are not sure what happened at the time of the man’s death. Shaw said the incident could be a homicide or overdose or something to do with the weather or a natural death.

“Naturally, since we have no witnesses at the scene, we are treating this as a homicide,” Shaw said. “There are some things in the basement that make this scene look like a homicide or foul play was involved in this case.”

Detectives said they have completed their on-scene investigation and investigation and are awaiting the autopsy report.

The man has not yet been identified and the cause of death has not been determined.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the MSP tip line at 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up.
