A flash flood watch is in effect for southern parishes

October 16, 2024

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A flash flood warning has been issued for low-lying and flood-prone areas of the southern parishes, as increased and heavy rainfall caused by a tropical wave continues to impact the island.

The Jamaica Meteorological Service issued the warning on Wednesday afternoon for the parishes of St Thomas, Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St Elizabeth and Westmoreland.

The flash flood watch will remain in effect until 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

The weather service said the tropical wave currently west of Jamaica is interacting with an area of low pressure in the southwest Caribbean. He added that this system is expected to bring periods of showers and thunderstorms to most parishes, particularly those in southern Jamaica.

Unsettled weather will continue from Wednesday afternoon until Friday morning, the Met Service said.

Fishermen and other maritime interests, particularly on the south coast, should exercise extreme caution as sea conditions will deteriorate near showers, thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind.
