LOS ANGELES — Seventeen students at Walter Reed Middle School in the Studio City/North Hollywood area were monitored Thursday morning, Oct. 17, for possible symptoms of an overdose, the Los Angeles City Fire Department said.

Around 10:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a reported overdose at 4525 Irvine Ave. Two students were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and the others are expected to be returned to school, officials said.

Details on what the students may have overdosed on were not provided.

The Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement saying “a group of students may have consumed a prohibited substance.”

Emergency services were contacted, the students received medical treatment and their parents were informed.

“The Los Angeles School Police Department is currently investigating this incident and we are actively working with our local health partners,” the statement said. “We ask that you talk to your children about drug addiction and the harmful side effects of controlled substances. We need your help to educate our students about the harm drugs can cause.

Last week, five girls from Nobel Charter Middle School in Northridge, began feeling ill after possibly ingesting cannabis edibles, authorities said.

Three of them were taken to hospital in fair condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Two were released to their parents or guardians after being assessed at the scene.
