IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – A Zonta club raised awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) on Wednesday.

The Zonta Club of Iron Mountain-Kingsford hosted a red dress event at Bay College Iron Mountain. The event featured speakers and indigenous foods to raise awareness of MMIW.

Guest speaker Kelly Tovar says she is happy to be able to raise awareness about the challenges Indigenous women face.

“It’s important to me,” Tovar said. “I am so honored to be asked to be a part of this because I believe this is an important cause. I think more attention needs to be paid to this issue.

Money raised through a silent auction will be donated to the Hannahville Indian Community.
