Trump makes misleading claims about migrants with criminal records

Trump said 13,000 people convicted of killing someone have arrived in the United States under the Biden-Harris administration, but ICE data does not show when these people arrived in America.

DHS stated: “The data goes back several decades; “they include people who came to the country in the last 40 years or more, and for the vast majority, the decision to grant care was made long before the current (Biden-Harris) administration.”

The list of detainees is not routinely made available and is only published in specific circumstances upon request – so we do not have exact numbers across administrations.

The data was previously published in June 2021, externalfive months into Biden’s presidency, which showed there were 405,431 convicted felons on the list at the time.

Previously official report published in August 2016, externalby the end of Barack Obama’s presidency it was 368,574.

Over the five years, including Trump’s term, the list grew by almost 37,000.

“These data show that a significant number of people would have been on the list under previous administrations, and the list has grown under multiple administrations, including Trump’s,” said Michelle Mittelstadt of the Migration Policy Institute.

The overall number of non-citizens on the list has increased in recent years due to high levels of immigration under Biden’s presidency.

“While the number of people on the non-detained list has increased significantly under the Biden administration, the number of convicted people on the list has not increased,” Reichlin-Melnick says.

In its letter, ICE does not specify how many foreigners with criminal convictions on its list are illegal immigrants and how many of them entered the United States, for example, on the basis of a green card.
