Hurricane Milton: More than 100 tornado warnings in Florida so far, NWS says

More than 100 tornado warnings have been issued across Florida as Hurricane Milton approaches the state’s Gulf Coast, according to the National Weather Service.

Tornado warnings were issued in Orlando and Central Florida, South Florida and metro Tampa Bay over the past few hours after the outer bands of Hurricane Milton pushed through the state.

The National Weather Service office in Greensville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, posted a chart on X (formerly Twitter) of all tornado warnings issued – a total of 133, as of 5:30 p.m.

Here is the breakdown:

  • NWS Miami: 49
  • NWS Melbourne: 35
  • Tampa: 49

“Stay safe Florida, we wish everyone good luck,” the NWS chapter said.

Numerous tornado warnings have been issued across Central Florida over the past few hours in Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, to name a few. Some have been indicated or confirmed by radar.

At one point, there were nearly a dozen active tornado warnings — either ground-confirmed tornadoes or radar-indicated tornadoes — across Florida, according to FOX 35 meteorologists.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on the west side of Florida Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. Officials encouraged Floridians to hunker down until the storm passed at this point. Tampa Bay areas could experience significant storm surge, flooding and damaging winds. Central Florida is expected to experience torrential rain, damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes as Milton’s outer bands move through it.

Here’s what to do in the event of a tornado

  • Access the innermost room of your home
  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • If you are driving, go to the nearest shelter. If you can’t do this, go to the lowest point of your car and cover your head.
