Premium bond scam warning as NS&I says ‘we would never do this’ | Personal Finance | Finance

NS&I has issued a scam warning to customers after a saver got in touch to report a suspicious email.

The customer contacted the Premium Bond provider via

They shared more details about the message, which purportedly came from “National Savings and Investments.”

They also shared the first lines of the email, which read: “Dear Customer To ensure that we continue to provide you with the best possible service, we ask that you please update…”

NS&I responded: “Based on the information you have provided, the email will not be authentic as we will never send you a direct link to follow to enter details.

“We simply ask that you forward the email to our phishing mailbox.”

The provider also invited the person to call if they wanted to speak to someone about their account, by calling 08085 007 007.

In another incident, a Premium Bonds customer recently got in touch because they were unable to cash their bonds due to an error message.

They asked: “What does the error message ‘This operation cannot be completed due to a reservation on an obligation’ mean? I’m trying to cash in bonds and close the account.

NS&I asked them if they had ever requested to opt out of their bonds, explaining that if they had, their available balance would be different from their holding balance.

The saver said: “No, the available balance is the same amount as I am trying to withdraw. Hence reducing the balance to zero and closing the account.

“I bought some new bonds at a premium at the end of September, but I don’t know why that should be a problem.”

NS&I responded: “We are not sure what could cause this error without access to your account information.

“To help you, we advise you to call us and ask to speak to an agent.” Savers can cash in their premium bonds at any time.
