GJEPC calls for transparent regulation on diamond disclosure

The Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has called on the government to establish strict regulations requiring traders to explicitly disclose whether diamonds are natural or synthetic in their marketing efforts. This decision, according to the council, is aimed at avoiding confusion among consumers and preserving the integrity of the domestic industry.

In an official communication with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the council stressed that transparency and clear, standardized guidelines are crucial. The move follows widespread misuse of terminology surrounding synthetic diamonds in India, which the council seeks to rectify by advocating for the adoption of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines.

India’s diamond industry, already facing global supply chain disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, is facing new challenges. As consumers increasingly turn to more affordable and durable synthetic diamonds, the need for accurate labeling has become imperative. The government supports this sector by promoting indigenous production and eliminating customs duties on lab-grown diamond seeds.
