California to ban “legacy admissions” to universities

Published on October 14, 2024 at 1:21 p.m.

California has become the first state in the United States to ban “legacy admissions” in higher education, a policy adopted by some private institutions that gives preferential treatment to the children of wealthy donors and alumni.

The move follows a landmark Supreme Court ruling last year that outlawed affirmative action – which for years had allowed for better representation of disadvantaged students of color in higher education.
