Black Hills Autism Society raises awareness and support with annual 5K run

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism in America, according to the Center for Disease Control. On Saturday, the Black Hills Autism Society came together to raise awareness and support its Zombie Uniquely You 5K walk.

The annual event usually takes place in April, marking Autism Awareness Month, but was moved to October for the Zombie Walk.

Ruth Conway, president of the Autism Society of the Black Hills, said the 5K was the biggest fundraiser of the year for the organization.

The Autism Society of the Black Hills is one of 70 affiliates of the Autism Society of America, the nation’s oldest and largest autism organization that provides support and services to the community of autism.

Christopher Banks, president and CEO of the Autism Society of America, attended the event and said it was a great opportunity to meet the board of directors of the Black Hills branch.

“We know that autism is widespread and knows no geographic boundaries. Thus, the Black Hills is committed to providing support and services to the autism community, which includes not only children but also young adults, adults and their families, and to connecting everyone to each other. others, making it a stronger community,” Banks said.

Katrina Worthington, vice president of the Autism Society of the Black Hills, said it is important for the organization to be represented in the Black Hills.

“Many families need that feeling of connection. With us, we are able to provide some of that feeling of connection to families and individuals who have family members on the autism spectrum. Personally, my kids love being able to interact with kids who look like them and seeing those interactions as well,” Worthington said.

Banks said he thinks it’s important for the community to support the company because every penny raised in the community stays in the community.

Proceeds raised from Saturday’s event will be used to fund the organization’s programs such as the Ice Cream with Officers event, monthly bowling and more.
