Birmingham family continues to search for answers two years after murder

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A Birmingham family is still searching for answers two years after a tragic loss.

On October 15, 2022, Roderick Gray Jr. was killed on 4th Avenue North. Now, Birmingham Police and Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers need the public’s help to solve this case.

The Gray family spoke at length earlier this year about the ordeal and how it has affected them over the past two years.

Roderick Gray Sr., the victim’s father, shared the impact of his son’s death on their family, saying, “In everyday life, someone will ask you, ‘How are you?’ Your first response will be “okay,” but you’re not okay. You’re never okay. You just move on through life.

Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers Executive Director Bob Copus said it all happened in the 200 block of 4th Avenue North around 2:30 a.m. While off duty, Birmingham police officers heard gunshots and found Roderick suffering from gunshot wounds in an alley. Despite their efforts to save him, Roderick died from his injuries.

Copus highlighted the deep and lasting impact of violent crimes on victims’ families.

“Every day you wake up, you go back to it. We have a mother who is grieving right now. This is going to be a difficult day for her. I know there are people who know what happened and just don’t want to get involved, or are afraid to get involved. But for now, this will be the end for the family. We’re going to bring a violent criminal to justice to answer for what he did,” Copus said.

He urged anyone with information about the case to come forward, emphasizing the need for closure for the grieving family and the importance of bringing the perpetrator to justice. A $5,000 reward is being offered to anyone providing a tip leading to an arrest.
